In honor of the Great American Footrace of 1928, the Lebanon-Laclede County Route 66 Society is hosting this Route 66 Centennial Bunion Derby 5K & Fun Walk. The original race, dubbed the "Bunion Derby", spanned some 3,400 miles from Los Angeles to New York City, utilizing Highway 66 to Chicago, before ending in New York. Averaging about 40 miles a day, the run took nearly three months to complete, and a few hardy folks actually made it the distance. Notably, the winner was a young Cherokee farmer from Foyil Oklahoma named Andy Payne. Andy's success cemented his place in the early history of Highway 66 forever. The Bunion Derby stands as one of those significant if quirky promotional efforts that helped Route 66 stand out in history. Runners and walkers in this event will traverse part of the same path as the original racers, passing several historic Route 66 sites including the old Carter and Lawson Phillips Station, the Lenz Tourist Home, Wrink's Market, and the Munger Moss Motel to name just a few. We want to invite everyone to get an up close and personal look at one of our most significant stretches of Route 66 in Lebanon, Missouri.
